One year jubelee celebration at the Goethe-Institut in Los Angeles
For the celebration of the one year's existence the Alumni group of Los Angeles the alumni met at the Goethe Institute on March 17th.
The participants arrived around 18:30 and had organized the food, too. Red and white wine was donated by the Goehte Institute. Everything was very nicely placed as a buffet in the Media Lounge. Daniel Chaffey, program coordinator of the Goethe Institute, and other staff did a lot of preparation work. Lively discussion started right from the beginning. In addition we had a slide show about Hamburg running on the screen in the Media Lounge.
Some participants also to take a look at the art exhibition of five artists from Berlin and Leipzig „Berlin superposition - Five position of contemporary art“ which commenced on the Friday before at the Goethe Institute (http://www.goethe.de/ins/us/los/ver/en12246728v.htm).
At 19:30 the official part started. After Christoph having welcomed the group we all introduced ourselves and realized that we had a lot of joined memories regarding out time at the university. From Daniel Chaffey, Laura Biedermann of the German Consulate General and Petra Korn of the German American Business Association, Southern California, we got different perspectives and useful hints regarding German lessons at the universities and High Schools in greater Los Angeles as well as about the issues around Green Card, preservation permission and nationality. Alumnae Cornelia Ballent and Marion Philadelphia gave us beyond these an idea about the programs of California State University Long Beach and the University of Southern California. Merrill had prepared a presentation, which gave the basis for further discussions with Katharina. There were some suggestions, how Alumni could contribute for the academic exchange, as the association could be the central contact point for others being interested. Also some common issues of Los Angeles and Hamburg were highlighted. Perhaps we can come to a cooperation with the haven authorities, especially because Hamburg will will host the 29th IAPH World Port Conference in 2015.
Daniel Chaffey presented tasks and the offer of the Goethe Institute. The literature and movie collection and the regularly events are of interest for all alumni und one should register for the weekly newsletter under: www.goethe.de/ins/us/los/enindex.htm.
There were also many suggestions for future alumni meetings, e.g. rather having a meeting over the weekend in order to avoid the heavy traffic on the freeways. Perhaps we can have a BBQ in one of the beautiful parks in Los Angeles. Some participants would like to visit a museum or a film festival like the German Currents taking place in October and being supported by the German Consulate. Beside that some Alumni are particularly interested in other’s core activities, for example geo information systems or also atomic physics, and would like to get a presentation about these. One Alumna kindly offered to host our next meeting at her place.
